Deiveson Figueiredo was crowned the new Flyweight Champion at UFC 270

Another UFC star has partnered with Blockasset. Flyweight Champion of the World, Deiveson “Deus De Guerra” Figueiredo is joining the Blockasset team!

Figueiredo is the first of a number of new athlete signings for Blockasset, and will soon release an NFT collection with the athlete-verified NFT platform. Deiveson will also be included in a yet to be revealed Blockasset project, more on this soon!

Figueiredo made his MMA debut in 2012 and in 2014 he signed with the top promotion in Brazil, Jungle Fight. The fight promotion has seen many Brazilian MMA stars come through its ranks, including Jose Aldo, Fabricio Werdum, and Paulo Costa.

“Deus De Guerra”, which translates to “God of War” made his UFC debut in 2017 and ran through the Flyweight Division for nearly 3 years before getting his crack at the title in 2020. He and Joseph Benavidez fought for the vacant Flyweight title left by Henry Cejudo, where Figueiredo would then become Champion for the first time. He recently just recaptured his title after a legendary 3 fight duel against Brandon Moreno.

Deiveson’s Story:

Deiveson Figueiredo is one of a kind. Born in the small town of Soure, Para, Brazil, Deiveson was always very active. His father was a herder of buffalo and Deiveson helped him a lot, calling himself a cowboy growing up. In fact, he spent so much time around buffalos that his father taught him the ways of luta marajoara, a local folkstyle wrestling that mimicked the actions of buffalo going at one another. This aggressive style of wrestling is evident in his fighting game, where he showcases phenomenal strength and power. He took up wrestling further and began to compete at a young age in Brazil until he ultimately began training MMA at age 16. He proceeded to fall in love with the sport and what it could do for his life.

After becoming one of the hottest prospects in the Brazilian MMA scene with an 11–0 record, Figueiredo entered the coveted UFC octagon in June of 2017. He defeated Marco Beltran after his opponent’s corner stopped the fight after 2 rounds. He would win 3 more fights in a row before losing by decision to Jussier Formiga. After that, it would be 2 years and 5 victories before he would lose again. He would follow his loss with impressive victories over Alexandre Pantoja and Tim Elliott, before ultimately getting a shot at Joseph Benavidez for the vacant UFC Flyweight title in 2020. However, Figueiredo missed weight for the initial Championship matchup, so he was not eligible for the belt. Despite this, they would still fight and Deiveson delivered a violent KO punch to win. They had a rematch immediately and this time there were no issues with weight. Deiveson captured the belt, this time winning via rear-naked choke. He took his belt back to Brazil where he was given a hero’s welcome in his hometown. He decided he wanted to open an MMA gym, which is currently being prepared to open its doors to the community and give them a place to safely train.

It was now time to defend the belt, so Figueiredo faced off against Alex Perez in November of 2020. He won in dominating fashion, earning the submission victory and the fight of the night bonus. That was Deiveson’s 3rd victory of the year and meanwhile, the UFC didn’t have a main-event for their final pay per view card of the year the following month. Like the true warrior he is, Deiveson Figueiredo stepped up to fight on short notice and took on Brandon Moreno in what many consider the fight of the year. It ended in a draw, although Figueiredo had a point taken from him for an illegal kick to the groin. Regardless, he retained his belt and remained the Flyweight Champion after one of the single greatest calendar years in the history of the UFC, fighting 4 times and not suffering a defeat. He was voted fighter of the year in a number of MMA awards and by various members of the media.

Anytime there’s a draw in any sport seemingly, there seems to be a rematch that takes place right after. That was the case when Figueiredo fought Moreno for the second time in June 2021. The fight did not go Deiveson’s way though and he lost his belt to Brandon Moreno. Deiveson was a good sport in defeat, even lifting up the newly crowned Moreno on his shoulders. However, words began to be said after the fight was over and the UFC decided to book a 3rd fight between the two to settle the score, for all the marbles. January 22 2022, in Anaheim, California these two fought for the title once again to see who the baddest man is in the Flyweight Division. This time, Deiveson would beat Moreno in a 5 round war to recapture the Flyweight title and become the Champion for the 2nd time in his career.
