Trip to meet Alexander Ovechkin
As one of the most standout NHL players of the 21st century, currently in his 17th NHL season, Alexander Ovechkin is a Blockasset legend. At only 8 years old, Ovechkin found interest in hockey, whether it was his brother taking him to training or watching it at home, it was clear where Ovechkin’s path was heading.
Ovechkin has an impressive athletic household, with his mother being a two-time Olympic Gold medalist, as well as his father being a professional soccer player. By 16, Ovechkin was playing at the highest level of Russian professional hockey, playing for Dynamo Moscow. 17-year-old Ovechkin, became the youngest skater to ever play for the Russian national team. This all led him to become the first overall Draft pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and was selected by the Washington Capitals.
In his first NHL season at the Capitals, Ovechkin lead all rookies in points by scoring 52 goals and 54 assists. Achieving rookie of the year in his first season and obtaining the Calder Memorial Trophy in the process, Ovechkin has continued to dominate the NHL acquiring many trophies and awards. Some of his many accolades in his NHL career till date includes, being a nine-time winner of the Richard Trophy award, given to the leading scorer in the NHL season. A three-time Lester B. Pearson award winner, for the most outstanding NHL player in a season and the Art Ross Trophy, for leading points in an NHL season. Ovechkin is an eight-time NHL First All-Star team player, also achieving great success in his international career where he won three World Championships Gold medals, in addition to winning the Kharlamov Trophy eight times being recognized as Russia’s best ice-hockey player.
